In this 2,000 sq. ft. student lounge addition to Bauer Wurster Hall, I sought to extend the existing language of the structure, employing the implied grid to dictate my form. This grid of squares became the foundation for my plan and sections, with its offsetting, extrusion, and push/pull manipulation forming the language of my cubic form. Coffered ceilings permit indirect light via clerestory windows, directly challenging the traditional language of a vertical void condition, while ambiguous moments of transition strengthen the unconventional nature of this addition. The grid convention is pushed to its extreme, with bisecting voids creating a sole columnar moment at its corner entrance, signifying the many conditions possible via simple manipulation of the square and minimal moves.
