Using the existing underlying grid to establish relational systems of movement and porosity, I created a form which invites use and encourages public interaction, emphasizing a frontage which straddles the border between public and private. Axis of movement carried over from Assignment 2.1 via interconnecting corridors, stairs, and paths allow users to circulate throughout the airy space, while large outward-facing windows and the field of skylights penetrate the solid mass to create an indoor-outdoor environment providing ample light inside. I strategically crevated a public-to-private gradient with the program, placing the most public-oriented features, notably a cafe, art gallery, and artists’ studios at the Greenway facade side, while apartments occupied the more private side of the site. Ultimately, I set out to hold true to the grid which was the basis for this assignment, using it to guide my processes and rationale for this adaptive-reuse artists collective.
