Drawing inspiration from the exquisite custom furniture by Arts and Crafts Architects Greene & Greene, the first of a set of nightstands explored the 45-degree angle as a means of proportioning and dictating form. Each piece is anchored via intricate joinery of dowels for the structure, and box joints for the drawer box. The 'cloud lifts' for the drawer housing echo traditional Japanese woodworking motifs, and balance the heavy upper half to its lighter lower counterpart. The tung oil and wax let the emphasis on craft and natural beauty shine through, as no decision was meant to be tucked away. A semester-long project, this first completely hand-drafted and made installment acts as an ode to a bygone era in craft, intention, and design capabilities.
